Earlier Report Observations
The salt market in Latin America and the Caribbean showed notable volatility between 2018 and 2022. After stable volumes around 16 000 thousand tons in 2018-2019, consumption rose to 17 836 thousand tons in 2020. This increase coincided with strategic investments by the major producer Exportadora de Sal SA (ESSA), which began expanding its transport and stacking capacity on Isla de Cedros to boost its international export footprint. However, the market contracted sharply in 2021 to 12 069 thousand tons.
A recovery to 14 428 thousand tons occurred in 2022, supported by shifting consumer preferences. Growing demand for premium salt varieties, such as Himalayan pink salt and gourmet salt, gained traction due to health trends, urbanization, and higher disposable income, favoring products perceived as organic and healthier. These niche segments contributed to the market's rebound in both volume and value, with the market value reaching $626.1 million.
Structural changes in the regional salt industry continued beyond 2022. In 2024, the Mexican government nationalized ESSA by acquiring a 49% stake from Mitsubishi Corp., aiming to diversify the market and improve price competitiveness. ESSA maintained plans to increase its annual production and export capacity to 8.5 million tons through logistics improvements at its Isla de Cedros operations.
