Earlier Report Observations

Production of natural graphite in Latin America and the Caribbean remained stable at around 130 million USD in 2018 and 2019, with Brazil consolidating its role as a major global producer led by the dominant company Nacional de Grafite. The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted global supply chains in 2020, causing production to drop to 109.4 million USD.

Output recovered to 114 million USD in 2021. In 2022, Chinese export restrictions on high-purity graphite tightened international supply and influenced prices, while rising demand for electric vehicle batteries provided market support. Despite this, the total market size declined to 100.5 million USD that year.

Market dynamics in 2023 were shaped by increased synthetic graphite capacity in China and new natural graphite projects in Africa, which helped balance supply. The cancellation of electric vehicle subsidies in China at the end of 2022 tempered demand growth, and ongoing market concentration in China remained a key factor influencing regional trade and investment.
