Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, Indonesia's salt market volume reached 5.5 million tons, supported by high imports for industrial sectors such as chlor-alkali, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The market then contracted to 4.0 million tons by 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic reduced demand from the hotel, restaurant, and catering sector, leading to a drop in domestic production.

Production continued to decline, falling to 900 thousand tons in 2022 due to wet drought and anomalous weather conditions. In response, the government introduced Presidential Regulation No. 126 of 2022 to accelerate national salt industry development, including strategic projects and optimization of state-owned PT Garam, aiming to enhance local production and reduce import dependence.
