Earlier Report Observations

The rye market in Western Europe expanded significantly from 2018 to 2020, with production rising from 2.5 million metric tons to nearly 3.9 million metric tons. This growth was primarily fueled by farmers increasing cultivation areas, especially for organic rye, after a period of high prices led to a supply surge and a price reduction of over €100 per ton. Rising consumer demand for organic food products further supported market volume during this period.

Following the peak, the market contracted through 2021 and 2022, with production falling to 3.5 million metric tons and market size dropping to 3.7 million metric tons. By 2023, a modest recovery brought the market volume to 3.8 million metric tons, but it operated under significant price pressure despite rising costs. Regional production challenges were highlighted by widespread Fusarium head blight and ergot contamination in Polish winter rye samples, affecting supply quality.

In 2024, adverse weather conditions, including an unusually wet autumn that more than doubled precipitation, impaired the sowing of winter cereals and reduced cultivation areas in countries like Austria. Concurrently, the market saw strengthened commitments to sustainability, with major players like Archer Daniels Midland expanding regenerative agriculture programs with new greenhouse gas targets, influencing rye supply contracts and pointing to a future shaped by climate adaptation and sustainable practices.
