Earlier Report Observations

The Swiss rye market volume grew to 13 314 t in 2019, supported by traditional production in Valais and the popularity of artisanal AOP rye bread. However, it fell to 11 796 t in 2020, coinciding with a reduction in reference prices for organic rye aimed at maintaining the competitiveness of domestic production.

The market then declined to 10 193 t in 2021 but rebounded strongly to 13 486 t in 2022, marking the highest level in the period.

In 2023, market volume decreased to 11 748 t despite a very good harvest of AOP rye, which saw production rise by 15–20%. For 2024, rainy summer weather led to a 29.4% drop in the rye harvest, affecting national supply, while production contracts under the Suisse Garantie brand were introduced to better align output with Swiss market needs.
