Earlier Report Observations

The coniferous roundwood market in Zimbabwe experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After a relatively stable period from 2018 to 2020 with market volumes around 580-591 thousand m³, demand surged in 2021 to 631 thousand m³. This was followed by a sharp contraction to 465 thousand m³ in 2022, before a slight rebound to 483 thousand m³ in 2023.

Domestic production, which largely drives market volume, mirrored this pattern. Output remained flat at 597 thousand m³ from 2018 through 2020, then jumped to 651 thousand m³ in 2021. However, production fell dramatically to 478 thousand m³ in 2022 and recovered only marginally to 493 thousand m³ in 2023. Export volumes, which subtract from domestic availability, peaked in 2019 and then gradually declined.

The overall market shrank by over 18% from its 2021 peak to 2023, indicating a significant downturn in the latter part of the period. Imports played a negligible role throughout, confirming the market's reliance on domestic harvesting.
