Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, the Danish roasted coffee market was characterized by conservative consumption patterns dominated by mainstream and economy segments, with four large suppliers controlling over 80% of sales. However, a gradual shift toward specialty, organic, and decaffeinated coffee began, supported by small micro-roasters investing in quality and freshness. Climate change impacts on coffee harvests in producing countries like Brazil started to exert upward pressure on bean prices, even as market volume grew slightly to 32 873 t by 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 made consumers more frugal, reducing demand and contributing to a market volume drop to 30 291 t. Logistic disruptions, including ship shortages and new trucking rules, raised costs and pushed coffee prices higher. Inflation became a significant factor in 2021, further elevating prices despite a marginal decline in volume to 29 971 t, while demand for sustainable and organic coffee continued to rise.

In 2022, coffee prices surged by 13.4% year-on-year due to compounded climate effects, logistic challenges, and increased demand. The to-go coffee segment doubled its sales over five years, reflecting changing consumption habits. Market volume recovered to 32 074 t, but value jumped sharply to $225.9 million. Subsequently, volume softened to 29 856 t by 2024, yet market value kept climbing to $236.1 million, supported by sustained price levels and a gradual premiumization trend.
