Earlier Report Observations

The market for roasted chicory and other coffee substitutes in Czechia expanded substantially from 1 339 t in 2019 to 2 486 t in 2024 in physical volume. This growth accelerated sharply in 2023 and 2024, following a period of relative stability earlier in the period. The increase was supported by several key developments, including regulatory actions that separated coffee substitutes from instant coffee blends and a sustained rise in coffee prices that made substitutes more cost-competitive.

A 2019 ban on adding coffee substitutes to instant coffee redirected demand toward standalone substitute products. Subsequently, global coffee price increases, further amplified by the EU's 7.5% import duty on roasted coffee from outside the union in 2022, raised the relative affordability of chicory and grain-based alternatives. At the same time, growing consumer interest in healthier options boosted the appeal of substitutes made from chicory, dandelion, and cereals.

By 2024, the market volume reached 2 486 t, more than 1.5 times the 2022 level. This rapid expansion reflects a structural shift in consumption patterns, where coffee substitutes have carved out a niche as both an economical and health-conscious choice compared to traditional coffee.
