This expansion was supported by consistent demand from the construction industry, where PVC pipes are essential for sewage, drinking water, and cable protection systems. The sector's strong orientation towards sustainability, reinforced by the Austrian Plastic Pipe Association (ÖAKR) and its established nationwide system for collecting and recycling used pipes, further underpinned market development.

Market volume contracted sharply to 17 181 t in 2023 from its 2021 peak. This downturn was primarily driven by a surge in global raw material costs, particularly for crude oil derivatives, which significantly increased production expenses for PVC pipes. Concurrent adjustments to stricter environmental and recycling regulations also contributed to a reduction in domestic output during this period.

A partial recovery was observed in 2024, with the market volume increasing to 19 216 t. The underlying demand from water network expansion and pipe replacement projects, alongside a construction sector that increasingly adopts plastic pipes as a cost-effective and durable alternative, provided a foundation for this rebound.

The peak volume was recorded in 2019 at 4 297 tonnes, which also saw the largest yearly surge of 44.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Italy, and Hungary were Austria's top destinations for rigid plastic PVC tubes, pipes and hoses by volume.
