The rice market volume in Southern Europe fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, reaching a peak of 2.2 million tons in 2019 before declining to 2.1 million tons in 2020 and 2021. A severe drought in 2022, which restricted water supplies and reduced planted area in key Spanish regions, led to a sharp contraction in domestic production and pulled the market volume down to 1.9 million tons.

Market volume recovered to 2.0 million tons in 2023, supported by a shift in consumer preferences toward long-grain and brown rice varieties. This trend was reinforced by new product launches from major retailers, including Mercadona's introduction of a long brown rice under its Hacendado brand, and ongoing innovation from leading producers like Ebro Foods.

Rice production in Southern Europe has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 2 686 K t of rice, showing only a marginal fluctuation compared to the previous year. The minimum production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 672 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 7.4%. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 6.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 2.4%.

Southern Europe's rice production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 2 279 M $ US, marking a moderate uptick of 4.0% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production increased by 8.6%, with an annualized growth rate of 2.8%.

Exports rice from Southern Europe

Exports in kind, K t

After a two-year decrease, cross-border shipments of rice from Southern Europe have increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 1 273 K t, representing a rise of 10.0% year-over-year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 157 K t, following the largest decline of 4.2% in 2018.

Throughout the period from 2017 to 2020, rice exports from Southern Europe were not concentrated on a few key markets. France accounted for 14.4% of exports in kind, the United Kingdom for 11.4%, and Germany for 10.8%, with these three countries together making up only 36.6% of total flows.

In 2020, rice deliveries from Southern Europe amounted to 1 080 M $ US, reflecting a rise of 13.9% over the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 18.6%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 5.8%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 0.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, exports in value terms of rice from Southern Europe were characterized by a broad spread across markets. France contributed 16.8% of exports in value terms, Germany 13.1%, and the United Kingdom 10.5%, with these three countries together accounting for only 40.4% of total flows.

Imports rice to Southern Europe

Southern Europe's volume of rice imports has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the import volume stood at 688 K t, up by 0.7% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 31.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of imports in kind was highly diversified. Guyana accounted for 18.4% of imports in kind, Pakistan for 14.3%, and Thailand for 8.5%, with these three countries together making up only 41.2% of total flows. The remaining 58.8% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

Cross-border shipments of rice to Southern Europe have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the import volume amounted to 508 M $ US, which is 9.3% higher compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 35.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5%.

Pakistan accounted for 19.0% of imports in value terms, Guyana for 10.3%, and Thailand for 10.1%, with these three countries jointly making up only 39.4% of total flows. The remaining 60.6% was dispersed among numerous smaller markets.
