Earlier Report Observations
Production of raw sheep and lamb skins in Mexico increased consistently from 10 909 tons in 2018 to 11 865 tons in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by rising demand for lamb meat, as the skins are a key by-product of the meat industry. Strengthening consumer interest in lamb, reflected in higher prices for sheep meat, supported greater slaughter volumes and consequently elevated skin output throughout the period.
By 2025, new state-level legislation was introduced to formalize the supply chain. The Livestock Law for the State of Yucatán regulated exports of animal-origin goods including skins, while a law in Durango mandated registration for tanneries and salting facilities. These measures aimed to standardize the commercialization and processing of raw hides, coinciding with the market's first significant import volume of 36 tons in 2025.
