Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the market volume of raw sheep and lamb skins in Central Asia reached 84 970 t. The construction of new leather processing workshops, such as the plants owned by Taalai Group with a capacity of up to 800 thousand skins annually, increased demand for unprocessed raw materials. However, in 2019, the market volume fell to 81 643 t due to systemic issues, including the annual discarding of millions of untanned skins, which highlighted insufficient processing and industry inefficiency.

The market began to recover in 2020, reaching 82 739 t, despite low utilization of processing capacities at only 6% and problems with raw material quality. A significant rise to 85 280 t in 2021 was directly linked to the ban on exports of untanned skins, which sharply reduced outward shipments and increased domestic supply. Further growth to 88 575 t in 2022 was stimulated by the abolition of export duties on skins of cattle and small ruminants, aimed at boosting production. By 2023, the market volume had grown to 91 227 t, although the industry continued to face low processing efficiency.
