Production of raw bovine and equine hides and skins in Gabon reached 196 tons in 2018 before entering a period of decline. The market volume fell to 176 tons in 2019 and 152 tons in 2020. In 2018, the government adopted a new Public Procurement Code, modernizing public finance management and favoring subcontracting to certified Gabonese SMEs, which altered market access conditions for businesses in the animal raw materials sector.

After a modest recovery to 156 tons in 2021, the market volume decreased again to 151 tons in 2022 and 149 tons in 2023. During these years, the broader economy experienced a post-pandemic recovery supported by higher oil prices and stable growth, creating a favorable investment climate for agriculture and livestock. However, production of hides and skins continued to contract independently of this macroeconomic context.

In 2024, authorities launched a project to import 1,000 head of cattle from Brazil to boost local livestock and dairy production, a significant step intended to strengthen the future supply base for raw hides. The government also issued multiple SME certifications to local enterprises and reinforced policies promoting domestic production and reducing imports, focusing attention on the development of the livestock and related sectors.
