Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, production of raw bovine and equine hides and skins in Burundi increased from 2 733 t to 2 989 t, while market volume grew from 2 811 t to 2 990 t. This expansion was driven by government-led bovine sector rehabilitation programs, which included large-scale redistribution of improved cattle breeds, and a national agricultural development strategy aiming to enhance livestock productivity and professionalize producers.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2020, with production falling to 2 106 t and market volume to 2 084 t. Recovery followed in 2021, reaching 3 218 t of production and 3 219 t of market volume. In 2022, despite a ban on cattle movement and slaughter due to an outbreak of Rift Valley fever that posed challenges to the sector, state funding for a livestock intensification program helped maintain production at 3 199 t, and market volume rose to 3 259 t. By 2023, production stabilized at 3 216 t with a corresponding market volume of 3 216 t.
