Earlier Report Observations

Production of coconut, palm kernel, and babassu oil in Sub-Saharan Africa grew from 446.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 523.8 thousand tons in 2023, while the market volume increased from 486.5 thousand tons to 553 thousand tons over the same period. A sharp 68% rise in import prices in 2021 made domestically produced oil more cost-competitive, which encouraged local output and contributed to the market's expansion.

Regional trade flows remained active, with South Africa exporting to Zimbabwe and other neighbors, and Ghana supplying markets including Nigeria and Senegal. Nigeria solidified its role as a key producer, representing 38% of Africa's palm kernel oil production by 2024, underscoring the influence of major national markets on regional supply.

By 2024, technological advancements in processing and extraction methods were improving efficiency in the sector. At the same time, growing consumer preference for ethically sourced and environmentally sustainable products began to influence production and marketing strategies across the region.
