Earlier Report Observations

The Chilean market for rapeseed, colza or mustard oil contracted significantly from 211.3 thousand tons in 2018 to 144.3 thousand tons in 2022. This decline was driven by a sharp drop in domestic production, which fell from 84.0 thousand tons to 46.3 thousand tons, as rapeseed cultivation became less competitive for farmers. External shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupted supply chains and raised global demand, while the Russia-Ukraine war triggered a steep surge in import prices, further reducing consumption volumes.

A modest recovery to 150.3 thousand tons occurred in 2023 amid still-elevated prices but slightly improved supply conditions. Throughout the period, the local company Agrotop attempted to support production by offering fixed-price contracts linked to import reference values. Regulatory developments, such as the initiation of the Lubricant Oil Targets Decree process in May 2019, aimed at promoting a circular economy, though its direct impact on edible oil market volume was limited.
