Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, quinoa production in Bolivia remained robust, exceeding 67 000 t each year and reaching 70 170 t in 2020. This output was sustained by strong international demand, fueled by the opening of new export markets and the accession of China as a major destination in 2019. However, the domestic market volume steadily declined from 37 521 t to 32 872 t over the same period, partially due to cultural perceptions of quinoa as a food for lower-income groups, which limited local consumption.

Beginning in 2021, both production and domestic market volume contracted sharply. Production fell to 41 380 t by 2023, while the market shrank to 15 802 t. This downturn was primarily driven by persistent challenges in agricultural yield optimization, which constrained output expansion. Price volatility and demand fluctuations further affected market stability. Despite this, export values rebounded strongly by early 2024, reaching record prices due to a growing global preference for organic quinoa, solidifying Bolivia's role as a supplier of exclusively organic crops.
