Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for pumpkins, squash and gourds in Libya grew from 34 730 t to 36 791 t. This expansion coincided with the adoption of a new sanctions regulation for price control in 2018, which influenced trader and consumer behavior. Despite rising fertilizer costs due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz increasing production expenses, domestic output remained stable. In 2020, the market was supplemented by the first significant imports of 1 451 t, even as the central bank's restrictions on letters of credit and foreign currency purchase limits hampered the import of seeds and agricultural inputs.

Following the 2020 peak, the market volume contracted to 33 576 t by 2022. This decline was primarily driven by the commencement of exports, which reached 1 738 t in 2022, while imports fell sharply to 110 t. Regulatory measures continued to shape the trade environment, including a 2021 ban on the re-export of goods aimed at channeling local agricultural products to the domestic market. However, these measures did not prevent the rise in outbound shipments, which altered the supply balance.

In 2023, the market stabilized at 33 863 t. Exports rose further to 2 417 t, and imports recovered to 836 t. During this period, market conditions were influenced by currency access restrictions through Libya's foreign exchange reservation platform and another spike in fertilizer prices following geopolitical tensions, which raised production costs. Despite these pressures, domestic production held steady at 35 445 t.
