From 2018 to 2021, the domestic market volume for prepared poultry in New Zealand expanded considerably, rising from 3 205 tons to 6 960 tons in 2020 before a slight correction to 6 595 tons in 2021. Domestic production hovered between 7 000 and 7 500 tons during this period.

A pronounced shift occurred from 2022, as the domestic market volume contracted sharply to 4 708 tons and further to 3 693 tons in 2023. This was primarily due to a surge in exports, which more than doubled from 2021 levels. In 2022, an 11.31% increase in poultry meat prices, driven by supply shortages and high feed costs for corn and soybeans, made foreign sales more attractive for local producers. The following year, global supply chain disruptions and avian influenza outbreaks that reduced worldwide poultry supplies further increased international demand for New Zealand exports.

The export-oriented trend continued beyond 2023, with shipments reaching 5 272 tons by 2025. Import volumes remained relatively low during this later period. Underlying this sustained export growth was continued consumer demand for convenient, processed poultry meat and the expansion of quick-service restaurant and online grocery platforms, which enhanced product accessibility abroad.
