Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the Southeast Asian market for prepared or preserved pork reached 54 067 t, supported by a 2.5% annual growth in regional consumption and the emergence of new product segments with innovations in preservation technologies. The market then contracted sharply to 34 321 t in 2019, primarily due to a decrease in the swine livestock population in Malaysia, a key producing country. This decline deepened in 2020, falling to 28 671 t as widespread African Swine Fever outbreaks in Vietnam and across the region caused severe supply chain disruptions and limited production expansion.

A turnaround began in 2021, with market volume recovering to 38 064 t as coordinated government and industry efforts to control ASF helped stabilize pig herds and supply. Growth continued into 2022, reaching 44 805 t, fueled by changing consumer preferences towards convenient, processed meat products and the expansion of e-commerce channels. The market volume then adjusted to 38 361 t in 2023; this coincided with the entry of new players and the expansion of modern livestock farms in Vietnam, which boosted domestic production and reduced import dependence, while growing consumer interest in plant-based alternative proteins moderated overall demand.

In 2024, African Swine Fever and foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Vietnam continued to cause local pig herd reductions and supply shortages. Concurrently, regulatory policies aimed at modernizing the livestock sector and expansion plans by major companies were implemented to strengthen domestic production capacity and market stability.
