Earlier Report Observations

The market for prepared or preserved pineapples in Guatemala contracted from 6 943 t in 2018 to 4 257 t in 2020. This decline was influenced by regulatory developments, starting with the 2018 presentation of Initiative 5504, the Healthy Eating Promotion Law, which proposed front-of-pack warning labels for products high in sugar. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic strengthened international demand for canned and frozen goods, including fruit preparations, leading to a sharp rise in exports to 2 121 t. With more output directed abroad, domestic market volume fell.

From 2021, the market recovered, reaching 6 837 t in 2022 before easing to 5 811 t in 2023. This rebound was driven by the processed food sector's export growth, with Guatemalan companies diversifying into international markets and offering innovative products like preserves. In 2022, the official adoption of front-of-pack nutrition labeling rules under the Healthy Eating Law coincided with increased pineapple exports and production. However, by 2023, the continued implementation of warning labels and health-conscious messaging aligned with a market contraction.

In February 2024, the Healthy Eating Promotion Law was definitively approved, mandating warning seals for products with critical nutrient levels. This completed a multi-year regulatory shift aimed at informing consumers about sugar content in items such as preserved pineapples.
