Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the prepared groundnuts market in Eastern Europe showed growth, supported by a recovery in demand for canned products. The high share of imported goods created competitive pressure, but domestic producers, concentrated in key regions, increased output. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and consumer behavior, yet industry adaptation helped maintain production volumes and stabilize the market.

After 2020, stagnant consumer demand became a primary factor, leading to a market decline to 88 thousand tons in 2021. Competition with foreign producers remained intense, stimulating technological innovations such as freeze-drying to improve product quality. Despite these measures, the market contracted sharply to 55 thousand tons in 2023, coinciding with increased domestic peanut cultivation and a strategic reassessment by major importers.

By 2024, unpredictable weather conditions, including spring frosts and summer drought, began affecting crop yields and consequently cannery output. Rising prices for finished products reflected changes in raw material costs and logistics. Simultaneously, consumer preferences shifted toward functional foods and plant-based diets, creating new opportunities for the nut segment, including groundnuts.
