Domestic production of prepared explosives in Bosnia and Herzegovina declined from 5 573 tonnes in 2018 to 2 944 tonnes in 2024, despite temporary recoveries in 2020-2021. Meanwhile, imports surged, particularly in 2023-2024, reaching 6 347 tonnes in 2024. This resulted in the overall market volume expanding from 5 773 tonnes to 8 921 tonnes over the period.

In value terms, the market also grew, from 7 654 thousand US dollars in 2018 to 12 479 thousand US dollars in 2024. The market value increase was especially pronounced in 2023-2024, when import value nearly tripled. Exports remained relatively stable with some fluctuations.

The key shift was the import spike in 2023, which compensated for falling domestic output and drove market expansion. Throughout the period, import dependency strengthened while local production continued to contract.

In 2021, output was valued at 3 900 thousand US dollars, marking a 2.9% increase compared to 2020. However, looking at the broader period from 2018 to 2021, production declined by 38.7%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 15.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 428 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline of 46.1% occurring that same year. In contrast, the largest increase of 10.5% was observed in 2020.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's prepared explosives production rose in volume for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 4 813 tonnes, up by 5.7% from 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production decreased by 13.6%, averaging an annual decline of 4.8%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 598 tonnes, which also saw the largest drop of 35.4%. The most significant increase of 26.5% occurred in 2020.

Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 488 tonnes of prepared explosives in 2021, representing a modest decrease of 7.7% compared to the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 5.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.8%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 410 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 11.3%. The highest volume was recorded in 2020 at 529 tonnes, with the largest increase of 28.9% occurring that year.

From 2018 to 2021, Croatia was the dominant destination for Bosnia and Herzegovina's prepared explosives exports in volume terms, consistently accounting for 94.1% of total flows.

Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports rose by 39.2%, averaging an annual growth rate of 11.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 285 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 18.1%. The largest increase of 43.7% occurred in 2020.

In 2021, imports stood at 1 778 tonnes, reflecting a significant decrease of 11.1% compared to 2020. The highest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 2 000 tonnes. From 2018 to 2020, imports varied considerably, with the largest increase of 176.7% occurring in 2019. Overall, imports in 2020 were three times higher than in 2018.
