Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the Dutch poultry meat and offal market volume initially declined from 1 164 thousand tonnes to 1 089 thousand tonnes in 2019, then recovered steadily, reaching 1 234 thousand tonnes in 2023. Growth in 2023 was partly driven by a rapid rise in imports from Ukraine after temporary import restrictions were lifted to support a country at war, boosting market supply. Earlier, in 2022, structural changes in poultry farming, including lower occupancy rates and limited housing space, led to a drop in domestic production, but the market expanded due to growing imports.

Consumer demand shifted towards convenient products, ready meals, and frozen meat and chicken snacks, stimulating market segmentation. Simultaneously, supermarkets switched to requiring at least one star of the 'Beter Leven' quality label, altering production requirements and market access. Antibiotic use in the sector fell by over 80% since 2009, affecting farming practices, while the announced tax reform with levies on meat from 2028 set long-term expectations.
