The Swedish potato starch market began to recover from the severe 2018 drought, which had drastically reduced potato harvests. EU deregulation of the starch sector, initiated in 2012, led to higher starch potato prices by 2017-2018, improving farm profitability and encouraging cultivation. This trend continued into 2019 and 2020, supported by ongoing EU production subsidies and quotas. The COVID-19 pandemic further influenced the market, shifting household consumption patterns and sustaining demand for potato starch. By 2021, production had risen to 15 024 t, and total market volume reached 33 605 t.

Adverse weather patterns, including dry summers and heavy rainfall, resulted in below-average potato harvests in 2022 and 2023, yet domestic starch production continued to grow, reaching 19 341 t in 2023. This expansion was supported by the strong global market for potato starch, which grew approximately 10% annually. In 2024, a combination of significantly higher starch potato prices, improved profitability, and a 13% increase in cultivated area led to a historic harvest of over 406 800 t of starch potatoes. Consequently, production surged to 37 055 t. During this period, new EU sustainability reporting rules and stricter quality controls on glycoalkaloids began to affect industry operations, while an investment by SLU Holding in SolEdits AB targeted the development of a new starch potato variety with natural storage stability.
