Earlier Report Observations

The potato market in Namibia expanded from 36 994 t in 2018 to 38 575 t in 2019, then stabilized near 38 522 t in 2020. During that year, farm gate prices for potatoes rose nationally, reflecting supply and demand dynamics in local markets that corresponded with the steady overall volume.

Market volume fell to 35 860 t in 2021, a period when agronomic trials were conducted to assess French potato varieties for local adaptation. A strong recovery followed in 2022, lifting volume to 40 042 t. However, the market contracted again to 35 582 t in 2023, driven primarily by shortages in local potato supply that increased prices and curtailed import volumes.

In response, the Agronomic Board of Namibia (NAB) partnered with multiple institutions in 2023 to launch the Potato Development Scheme and a strategic business plan aimed at boosting local production and creating jobs. The initiative sought to address persistent supply constraints, which were further exacerbated by high input costs and low rainfall affecting farmer output.
