From 2018 to 2021, the potato market volume in Belarus contracted from 4.2 million tonnes to 3.3 million tonnes. This decline was primarily driven by a continued reduction in potato planting areas across agricultural enterprises, which limited production capacity.

Market volume recovered to 3.8 million tonnes in 2022 and reached 3.9 million tonnes in 2023. This turnaround was supported by growing export opportunities, particularly to Russia and other CIS countries, which encouraged higher production. The adoption of new storage technologies, such as controlled atmosphere storage with ethylene inhibitors, also helped reduce post-harvest losses and maintain supply.

In 2020, Belarus produced 3 708 thousand tonnes of potatoes, marking a 14.9% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 26%, which translates to an average annual decline of 9.5%. The only year with growth was 2019, when production increased by 0.2%.

Potato exports from Belarus showed an unstable trend during this period. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 144.2 thousand tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 314.8 thousand tonnes, resulting in a 2.2-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports fell to 227.8 thousand tonnes, a 27.6% decrease from 2019. The largest increase was in 2019, when exports surged by 118.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine and Russia were the dominant buyers of Belarusian potatoes, together accounting for 85.0% of total exports by volume. Other destinations each held relatively small shares.

Potato imports into Belarus increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 6 405 thousand US dollars, up 45.8% from the prior year. However, over the full period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 17.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -6.2%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 4 217 thousand US dollars, and the largest decline that year was 45.6%.
