The Austrian market for potato flour, flakes, granules and pellets, measured in volume, contracted significantly from 5 870 t in 2018 to 4 070 t in 2023. This downward trend was interrupted only by a sharp, temporary drop to 2 418 t in 2022, which was caused by a single year of substantial exports totaling 2 120 t.

Domestic production consistently fell from 449 t in 2018 to 346 t in 2023. Imports, which make up the bulk of the market supply, also declined from 5 421 t to 3 725 t over the same period, reinforcing the overall market contraction.

Following the atypical export-driven low in 2022, the market volume recovered to 4 070 t in 2023. Despite this rebound, the market size remained well below the levels seen at the start of the period, indicating a sustained reduction in both local output and import demand.

Austria's production of potato flour, flakes, granules, and pellets declined after two years of growth. In 2019, output reached its peak at 0.5 thousand tonnes, but by 2020 it had fallen to 0.4 thousand tonnes, marking a 2.8% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production overall increased by 6.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.0%. The most significant rise occurred in 2018, when production jumped by 8.5%.

In 2019, imports dropped by 14.0%, followed by a further 9.3% decline in 2020 to approximately 4 230 tonnes. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 5 421 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 30.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland were the main suppliers of potato flour, flakes, granules, and pellets to Austria. The Netherlands accounted for 41.0% of imports in kind, Germany for 32.7%, and Poland for 12.9%, together making up 86.5% of total imports.

In 2020, imports totaled 5 494 thousand US dollars, down 12.4% from the previous year. The peak value was in 2018 at 6 582 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 38.7%. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 15.8%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 5.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland remained the top suppliers of potato flour, flakes, granules, and pellets to Austria in value terms. Germany contributed 39.1% of import value, the Netherlands 30.1%, and Poland 14.3%, collectively accounting for 83.5% of total imports.
