Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2022, the Australian market for potato flour, flakes, granules and pellets expanded from 5 013 t to 10 192 t, more than doubling in size. This surge was primarily fueled by the deregulation of Western Australia's potato industry, where the repeal of the Marketing of Potatoes Act in May 2021 removed transport and sales restrictions, unlocking supply. Concurrently, a shift in consumer preferences toward health-conscious and gluten-free diets boosted demand for potato flour as an alternative to wheat-based products.

In 2023, the market volume contracted to 9 086 t, partly reflecting the lingering effects of supply chain disruptions that had begun impacting raw material availability and producer costs. Domestic production of potato flour, however, reached a peak of 1 831 t in 2023, while imports, which had been a key growth driver, declined from the previous year's high.

For the later years, import levels remained substantial, with volumes staying above 6 500 t, underpinned by sustained global demand for gluten-free and plant-based ingredients. Supermarket contracts and closed-loop supply chains continued to play a significant role in shaping market access and price stability across the industry.
