Earlier Report Observations
Pork production in Israel grew from 13.3 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 15.1 thousand tonnes in 2020. This increase coincided with regulatory actions that effectively blocked imports of non-kosher meat, including pork, by requiring kosher certification, which shielded domestic producers from foreign competition. During this period, the market also saw the initial introduction of plant-based and cultivated meat alternatives, though their commercial impact was still limited.
A pronounced downturn began in 2021, with production falling to 10.9 thousand tonnes by 2023. The contraction was driven by the continued expansion of import quotas for fresh meat, which intensified competition from other meat categories despite pork-specific import barriers. Simultaneously, a sharp rise in meat prices of up to 50% dampened overall demand, while the world's first regulatory approval for cultivated meat in Israel in 2023 accelerated a shift in consumer interest toward alternative protein sources.
