Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2024, the pork market volume in Bosnia and Herzegovina experienced mixed dynamics, declining moderately to 21.5 thousand tons in 2020 before entering a period of sustained expansion. The market grew from 25.0 thousand tons in 2021 to 33.5 thousand tons in 2024, driven primarily by rising imports that compensated for limitations in domestic supply.

The growth from 2021 onward was fueled by strong consumer demand for meat, which domestic producers could not fully meet in terms of volume or price. This led to increased reliance on imported pork, with imports rising to 19.5 thousand tons in 2022, contributing to a market volume of 28.5 thousand tons. Concurrently, the competitive pressure from imports resulted in the closure of numerous domestic pig farms, highlighting structural challenges in local production.

By 2024, import dependency intensified further, with pork imports reaching 25.6 thousand tons and supporting a market volume of 33.5 thousand tons, even as domestic production fell to 8.2 thousand tons. Throughout this period, domestic farmers and processors continued to call for protective measures such as import duties and taxes to address the perceived non-competitiveness of local production.
