Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the pork market in Indonesia grew from 216 thousand tons to 282 thousand tons. This expansion was primarily driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the adoption of online shopping for frozen products, significantly increasing the availability and consumption of frozen pork in urban areas.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume declined to 263 thousand tons in 2021 and then stabilized at 267 thousand tons in 2022. During this period, the government eased import regulations for frozen meat through Minister of Trade Regulation No. 20/2021, allowing private companies to import more easily and contributing to rising import volumes. Concurrently, new packaging and labeling requirements under the "ASUH" program for safety and halal certification influenced market standards, while local producers like Japfa expanded their frozen pork portfolios through e-commerce channels.

In 2023, the market sharply contracted to 172 thousand tons, largely due to a significant drop in domestic production. Imports continued to grow, reaching 3.9 thousand tons. Regulatory factors such as tightened quarantine procedures for imported meat and ongoing cold-chain infrastructure development played a role in shaping the market environment. Subsequent years saw continued regulatory evolution, including new nutritional and halal labeling requirements and the growth of e-commerce applications for frozen meat purchases.
