Earlier Report Observations

Colombia's pork market volume expanded from 478 000 tonnes in 2018 to 528 000 tonnes in 2019. In 2020, the total market saw a slight contraction to 509 000 tonnes, primarily due to a significant drop in imports. During this period, the sector maintained promotional campaigns for domestic pork consumption to support local demand, while the creation of the CI PorkCo export company signaled a strategic push toward international markets.

The market rebounded strongly, reaching 580 000 tonnes in 2021, driven by robust consumer demand that persisted despite rising meat prices. Growth continued into 2022, with the market volume climbing to 646 000 tonnes. This expansion occurred alongside increased production costs from feed prices and disease outbreaks, but was supported by a 7% rise in domestic output and new export opportunities, including Singapore's market access approval and the implementation of a 'technified pig farming' status to facilitate international trade.

By 2023, the pork market volume further increased to 674 000 tonnes. New retail regulations from INVIMA, mandating refrigerated display cases and the physical separation of pork from beef at points of sale, represented a significant change in the distribution landscape for the industry.
