Earlier Report Observations

The pork market in Barbados showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023, with overall consumption increasing from 4 182 tons to 4 620 tons. The market expanded to 4 496 tons in 2019 but contracted significantly to 4 043 tons the following year.

A recovery began in 2021, lifting the market to 4 355 tons, and after a minor stabilization in 2022, consumption reached a record 4 620 tons in 2023. This upward trend unfolded against a backdrop of declining domestic production, which fell from 2 772 tons to 2 601 tons over the same period.

The gap left by lower local output was filled by a substantial rise in imports, which grew from 1 424 tons to 2 019 tons, indicating a structural shift toward imported pork to satisfy Barbadian demand.
