The highest production value was recorded in 2018 at 2 976 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase that year of 13.6%. In contrast, 2019 saw the steepest drop of 21.2%.

In 2020, Spain produced 644.0 tonnes of POM in primary forms, showing a slight increase of 1.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, production decreased by 14.5%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 5.1%. The lowest production volume was in 2019 at 633.0 tonnes, while the peak was in 2018 at 807.0 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 21.6% drop, whereas 2018 experienced the biggest increase of 7.2%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Export volumes of POM in primary forms from Spain reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a 1.7-fold difference between these extremes. In 2020, exports totaled 1 733 tonnes, representing a 6.4% decrease from 2019. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 2 065 tonnes. The largest decline happened in 2019 with a 10.4% drop, while 2018 saw the most significant increase of 73.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export partner structure remained fragmented. Portugal accounted for 15.4% of exports in kind, Malaysia for 11.2%, and Italy for 9.8%. Together, these three countries made up only 36.5% of total flows, with no single partner holding a dominant share.

Exports of POM in primary forms from Spain declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export value amounted to 4 251 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 13.1% year-on-year drop. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 19.2%, equating to an annualized decline of 6.9%. The peak value was in 2018 at 6 662 thousand US dollars. The largest decrease occurred in 2019 with a 26.6% fall, while 2018 recorded the biggest increase of 26.6%.

During 2017-2020, Portugal was the leading buyer with 21.1% of export value, followed by Italy at 12.4% and Czechia at 10.4%. However, their combined share reached only 43.9% of total exports in value terms, leaving the remaining 56.1% distributed among numerous other partners.

After two years of growth, imports of foreign POM in primary forms into Spain declined. In 2020, Spain imported 11 310 tonnes, representing a 14.2% year-on-year decrease. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 6.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.1%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 13 180 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 6.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Belgium, and South Korea were the key sources for imports in kind. Germany accounted for 36.5% of imports, Belgium for 27.6%, and South Korea for 14.8%. Together, these three countries made up 78.9% of total import flows.

Spain's imports of POM in primary forms declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, import value stood at 23 298 thousand US dollars, which is 20.6% lower than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 21.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -7.7%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 33 344 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 12.4%.

In 2017-2020, Germany, Belgium, and South Korea continued to be the main suppliers of POM in primary forms to Spain in value terms. Germany held 41.6% of import value, Belgium 28.3%, and South Korea 11.0%. Collectively, they accounted for 81.0% of total imports in value terms.
