The fluctuations in market size were primarily driven by changes in import volumes, which fell sharply from 1 743 т in 2018 to 894 т in 2020 before rebounding to over 2 000 т in 2022 and 2023. This import volatility amplified the market's decline and subsequent expansion.

By 2023, the market's growth momentum slowed considerably, with volume increasing by less than 1% compared to 2022, indicating a phase of stabilization. The combined supply from domestic output and imports supported a market consistently above 10 000 т in the latter years.

After a two-year decline, plum and sloe production in Eastern Africa increased. In 2020, production reached 7 506 tonnes, remaining stable compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, overall production decreased by 3.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 7 500 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2018 at 2.1%.

Eastern Africa's imports of plums and sloes declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 894 tonnes, which is 23.3% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, total imports decreased by 59.2%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 25.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, South Africa remained the main supplier of plums and sloes to Eastern Africa, accounting for 77.1% of total imports in volume. The remaining imports were distributed among other countries.

Plum and sloe imports into Eastern Africa declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, Eastern Africa imported plums and sloes worth 1 551 thousand US dollars, representing a significant 22.8% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 38.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -14.8%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 2 563 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest year-on-year increase at 2.3%.
