Earlier Report Observations

The fresh pears market in Eastern Africa remained stable from 2018 to 2020, with volumes around 15 000 t. The introduction of disease-resistant seedlings and improved agricultural practices supported production, while growing demand in local and international markets laid the foundation for expansion. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 temporarily affected marketing and demand, leading to a slight stabilization.

Post-pandemic recovery drove market growth to 16 348 t in 2021, further increasing to 16 617 t by 2023. This was fueled by rising exports to countries like Bahrain and Rwanda, as well as diversification into pear-derived products. Investments in nurseries and plantations expanded cultivated area, and a consumer shift towards organic and healthy foods boosted demand for fresh pears.

In 2024, the market continued its upward trajectory, supported by government agricultural policies and the adoption of advanced farming technologies. Changes in labeling regulations and international market access also influenced commercialization, while global healthy eating trends reinforced the appeal of pears.
