From 2018 to 2021, the market for fresh plums and sloes in China showed moderate fluctuations. Market volume increased to 7.04 million metric tons in 2019, then decreased to 6.87 million metric tons in 2020, and recovered to 6.93 million metric tons in 2021. Domestic production remained stable between 6.85 and 6.99 million metric tons during this period, while import and export volumes varied more noticeably.

Market volume reached a high of 6.98 million metric tons in 2022 before a slight decline to 6.91 million metric tons in 2023. By 2024, imports grew to 109 thousand metric tons, a rise supported by a zero import tariff applied to fresh plums and sloes. This period also saw broader agricultural modernization policies and a shift in consumer preference towards fresh, high-quality produce, which helped sustain market activity. Regional development of the plum industry in areas like Guangxi and Yunnan contributed to a more structured supply chain.

China was the world's leading producer of plums and sloes from 2017 to 2020.

After two years of growth, plum and sloe production in China declined. In 2020, China produced 6 853 thousand tonnes, down 2.0% from the previous year. Production peaked in 2019 at 6 992 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.1%.

Exports plums and sloes from China

China's plum and sloe exports have grown for three consecutive years. In 2020, exports reached 54 973 tonnes, marking a sharp year-over-year increase of 42.8%. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 166%, with a compound annual growth rate of 38.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam was the dominant export market in volume terms, accounting for 76.4% of total flows, while the remainder was distributed across various other markets.

China's cross-border shipments of plums and sloes have increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 94.9 million US dollars, reflecting a significant 45.2% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 154.6%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 36.5%.

During 2017–2020, Vietnam remained the primary market for exports in value terms, holding a 79.7% share of total flows, with the rest fragmented among numerous other destinations.

Imports plums and sloes to China

The import market showed volatility over the observed period. Imports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 2.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, cross-border shipments of plums and sloes into China totaled 66 455 tonnes, a 21.3% decrease from the previous year. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 84 421 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 73.7%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Chile was the leading source for imports in volume terms, accounting for 85.7% of total flows, while other markets together made up the remainder.

After two years of growth, China's plum and sloe import volume declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 154.8 million US dollars, representing a substantial 20.3% drop year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 49.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.4%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 194.3 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 65.3%.
