Earlier Report Observations

The Portuguese plugs and sockets market expanded significantly between 2018 and 2021, with production increasing from USD 11.4 million to USD 15.5 million and total market size growing from USD 53.3 million to USD 72.7 million. This rise was fueled by regulatory advancements tailored to electric vehicle adoption, notably the 2019 adjustments to align with IEC 60309 and EN 62196 standards for industrial and EV charging applications, and the 2020 publication of the Technical Guide for Electrical Installations for Electric Vehicle Power Supply, which specified new requirements for charging connectors and sockets.

After reaching a peak in 2021, production declined to USD 14.8 million and the market size contracted to USD 67.9 million in 2022. That year also brought updates to national norms for plugs and sockets, harmonized with European standards, and policies promoting electrical safety and energy efficiency. Subsequently, import values climbed steadily from USD 87.4 million in 2022 to USD 134.2 million in 2025, while exports rose from USD 34.3 million to USD 49.3 million, reflecting ongoing electrification trends in the economy.
