Earlier Report Observations

The Asian pistachio market volume grew from 605.8 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 803.6 thousand tonnes in 2021, supported by increased global production. This rise was facilitated by agricultural advances and greater investment in pistachio cultivation in the United States, a leading global supplier. After a contraction to 704.2 thousand tonnes in 2022, the market recovered to 735.3 thousand tonnes in 2023.

In 2024, a worldwide pistachio shortage emerged due to a 20-26% drop in the U.S. harvest—an off-year cycle—and surging global demand fueled by the popularity of pistachio chocolate in Dubai. This shortage sharply increased competition for stocks, driving Asian imports up to 303.0 thousand tonnes. Throughout the period, the United States, Iran, and Turkey maintained their dominance as the top global producers, shaping supply availability.

New production regions developed, such as France, where the first harvests from plantings started in 2018 were realized, though volumes remained marginal globally. Product innovation also advanced, with major U.S. companies expanding their ranges of pistachio-based snacks, responding to growing consumer preference for healthy and gourmet snack options.
