Earlier Report Observations
The market for edible pig offal in Papua New Guinea remained stable at around 5 350 tons in 2018 and 2019. During these years, smallholder farmers adapted to rising commercial feed prices by increasing the use of local feed resources like sweet potato silage and fish meal to reduce costs and maintain productivity. Farmers also focused on selecting pig breeds such as Berkshire and Duroc to meet demand for premium pork, supporting production efficiency.
In 2020, the market volume grew to 5 727 tons, marking the highest level in the period. This increase occurred alongside stable domestic production and a rise in imports. The market then adjusted in 2021, declining to 5 535 tons, before stabilizing around 5 550 tons in 2022 and 2023.
Throughout the period, long‑term demographic trends pointed to a growing population in Papua New Guinea, projected to exceed 10 million and reach 21 million by 2050, underpinning potential future demand for pig products. However, persistent challenges such as feed cost pressures required farmers to continue optimizing local resources to sustain output.
