Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, Zambia's production of pig fat held steady around 2 500 t. This stability occurred despite recurring African Swine Fever outbreaks, largely because Zambeef, a major state-owned agribusiness, doubled the prices it paid to local pig farmers to encourage production. In 2020, output fell to 2 115 t as global COVID-19 pandemic disruptions to supply chains affected feed availability and raised costs for producers, even as new market entrants like Chimphembela Trust Limited began contracting smallholder farmers.

A modest recovery to 2 147 t followed in 2021, supported by Zambeef's continued procurement efforts and the enactment of the Animal Identification and Traceability Act, which aimed to improve disease control. Production then contracted to 1 827 t in 2022 as rising feed prices increased operational costs for pig farmers. The market rebounded sharply in 2023, with production jumping to 2 653 t. This growth was driven by the ongoing rollout of the national animal traceability system and sustained price incentives from key processors, which helped offset the pressure from significantly higher feed costs.
