Pig and poultry fat production in India rose from 28 890 tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 29 581 tonnes in 2019, supported by the strong expansion of the domestic poultry sector and growing consumer demand for processed meat products. This increased meat output raised the availability of fat as a by-product, while vertical integration among leading poultry companies further consolidated production efficiency. The market then contracted sharply to 27 131 tonnes in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread supply chain disruptions, affecting meat processing and distribution across the country.
Output declined further to 26 116 tonnes in 2021 following the implementation of stricter labeling and traceability regulations, which required operational adjustments across the industry. A recovery began in 2022, with production increasing to 26 868 tonnes, aided by government policies promoting meat exports and the entry of new specialized players into the processed meat segment. By 2023, production stabilized, reaching 27 271 tonnes as the market continued to adjust.
