From 2018 to 2019, the market volume for petroleum coke, bitumen and residues in Russia grew from 15 201 thousand tonnes to 17 562 thousand tonnes. This expansion was driven by the modernization of oil refineries, which increased the depth of oil processing and boosted domestic production.

The market contracted to 16 014 thousand tonnes in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic caused plant suspensions and reduced demand. It rebounded sharply to 19 211 thousand tonnes in 2021, supported by continued refinery upgrades and higher processing capacity that raised output after the pandemic-induced slump.

Market volume then fell to 18 563 thousand tonnes in 2022 and further to 16 901 thousand tonnes in 2023. This decline was primarily due to international sanctions and geopolitical factors, which dampened both domestic and external demand while export restrictions and currency fluctuations constrained market activity.

Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 15.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 18 505 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 11.3%.

Russia's exports of petroleum coke, bitumen, and residues surged to 2 351 thousand tons in 2020, marking a sharp 64.6% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 36%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.8%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 428 thousand tons, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 22.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, three key markets—China, Kazakhstan, and Turkey—collectively accounted for 56.0% of Russia's total exports of petroleum coke, bitumen, and residues in volume terms.

In 2020, the value of Russia's petroleum coke, bitumen, and residues exports amounted to 248.6 million US dollars, showing a 7.6% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 37%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.1%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 294.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 62.1%. The largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 21.5%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports declined by 31.2%, equating to an average annual decrease of 11.7%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 493 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 13.5%.
