From 2018 to 2020, the persimmon market in Iran contracted from 29,266 t to 26,797 t. This decline was primarily caused by drought and pest damage in major producing provinces, which limited harvests in 2018 and 2019. Furthermore, international sanctions and reduced foreign relations from 2020 onward began to hinder the industry's progress, although production volumes remained stable.

The market recovered to 28,560 t in 2021, largely because tightened U.S. sanctions sharply cut export volumes, making more persimmons available for domestic consumption. In the following years, changes to import policies and tariffs, coupled with growing consumer preference for higher-quality and organic fruit, influenced market structure. By 2023, the expansion of online sales through improved e-payment infrastructure and increased promotion on social media contributed to a slight market growth, reaching 28,316 t.

In 2024, the continued effect of sanctions maintains pressure on export operations, while producers focus on adapting packaging and labeling to meet international standards for better access to export markets.

Persimmon production in Iran declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 29 876 tons, remaining broadly stable compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 5.8% drop, while the highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 31 790 tons, marking a 4.8% increase from the previous year.

From 2017 to 2020, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman were the top destinations for Iran's persimmon exports in volume terms. Iraq accounted for 53.0% of exports, the United Arab Emirates for 25.5%, and Oman for 11.2%, together making up 89.7% of total export flows.
