Earlier Report Observations

The pepper market in French Polynesia experienced significant volatility in volume between 2018 and 2023. Market size peaked at 121 305 kg in 2021, driven largely by a surge in imports to over 55 000 kg that year. However, this was followed by a sharp contraction to 91 339 kg in 2022 as imports fell back to near 2020 levels.

Local production also fluctuated, reaching 99 000 kg in 2019 before declining to 66 000 kg in 2021. The market saw infrastructural developments in 2022 with the entry of the frozen food retailer Picard in Pirae, expanding retail access, while the renovated Mapuru a Paraita municipal market in Papeete continued to support local product sales with high foot traffic.

By 2023, production showed modest recovery to 74 900 kg, but lower imports kept the total market volume at 88 605 kg, slightly below 2022 levels and indicating a shift toward domestic supply.
