Beginning in 2022, production and market volume entered a period of decline, reflecting a sustained reduction in bearing acreage across the United States. Despite the growing importance of online retail and sustainable farming practices, total output fell to 666.8 thousand tons in 2023, with consumer preferences increasingly favoring locally grown and organic options.
