Earlier Report Observations
The palm-kernel oilcake market in China began the period at 599 thousand tonnes in 2018, supported by the country's position as the world's largest palm oil importer and sustained demand growth. Market volume then rose sharply to 850 thousand tonnes in 2019, a year when global palm oil production faced tightening environmental regulations and cost pressures. After a contraction to 752 thousand tonnes in 2020, the market recovered to 949 thousand tonnes in 2021 amid a tightly integrated palm oil supply chain.
Growth continued to 1,021 thousand tonnes in 2022, aided by supply constraints in major producing regions from extreme weather and aging oil palms, which limited global yield. The market surged to 1,491 thousand tonnes in 2023, coinciding with record Chinese exports of used cooking oil, an indirect factor influencing palm-related product flows.
In 2024, import volumes of palm-kernel oilcake fell to 936 thousand tonnes. This shift followed the introduction of the national standard GB/T 18009 for palm kernel oil, which set new composition parameters, and was concurrent with biodiesel blending mandates in Indonesia and Malaysia that altered global palm oil demand and supply patterns.
