The market volume for paddy rice in Congo declined from 1 229 t in 2018 to around 1 000 t in 2021-2023. A temporary increase to 1 185 t occurred in 2020, driven by the launch of local paddy rice production in Nkundi, which demonstrated local bio-rice capacity, supported by a proactive government agricultural policy to revive the domestic rice sector, including local processing in Kimpese and distribution through the Congolese company Egal RDC.

After 2020, the market volume stabilized near 1 000 t. In 2022, a sharp rise in rice prices in Kinshasa, with a 50 kg bag of Lion brand rice increasing from 90 000 FC to 97 000 FC, impacted household purchasing power. By 2024, substantial imports of Thai rice, exceeding 109 000 t, influenced market supply, while a stable macroeconomic environment with near 5% GDP growth, controlled inflation, and maintained central bank rates supported favorable conditions for the rice market.
