Earlier Report Observations

The paddy rice market in Brunei experienced a notable shift between 2018 and 2020. Initial government efforts in 2018, including the establishment of the state-owned Wasan Milling Company and the introduction of high-yield hybrid rice varieties like 'Titih', aimed to increase local production. These measures, alongside the launch of commercial paddy farming in the Kandol area, set the stage for a significant jump in output. By 2020, production surged to 3 900 t, a rise largely driven by off-season cultivation programs and the formal operational takeover by Wasan Milling Company, which boosted milling capacity and supported the total market volume reaching 4 053 t.

Production growth continued into 2021, reaching 4 100 t, supported by the ongoing development of irrigation and other infrastructure for the commercial Kandol project. However, output declined to 3 563 t in 2022, reducing the overall market size to 3 739 t. A partial recovery followed in 2023, with production rising to 3 726 t, aided by the continued use of modern agricultural technologies and focused management of acidic soils to improve yields.
